It’s not every day you see a US wasp-class amphibious assault ship sail into port, let alone supply fuel to it. So, when asked to refuel the USS Bonhomme Richard as it set its anchor in the Port of Brisbane, Bulk Fuel Australia was up for the task.
One look at the images of this impressive vessel and it's clear to see why they are our Photo of the Month winner.
USS Bonhomme Richard in Australian waters
Hundreds of spectators gathered to catch a glimpse of American military might as it sailed into Brisbane Port early July. The 257-metre long ship, carrying marines, army vehicles and rotary-wing aircraft, arrived for bunkering and to give the crew a much-needed rest post the Talisman Saber 2017 – a military training exercise which took place off the coast of Queensland. This year’s event saw more than 33,000 Australian and US troops, 20 ships and 200 aircraft in what was the countries’ largest training exercise to date.
The vessel has participated in several operations throughout its 20-year tenure. It played a significant role in Operation Iraqi Freedom and supplied relief efforts following the 2004 Indian earthquake. Its current responsibilities involve monitoring the escalating tensions from North Korea.
How we do on-site refuelling for Ports and Marine
Bulk Fuel Australia offers creative and customised solutions for supplying marine fuel in the safest, cost-effective and most efficient manner that meets our marine client’s goals. There are many safety considerations applied to the storage of petroleum in ships of this size as well as the act of refuelling.
Contamination is a major issue for the marine industry and can be caused via water finding its way into the fuel supply or through the corrosive marine environment. This can result in reduced performance, blockages, wear and tear of crucial ship components and corrosion.
The best way to reduce contamination is through regular maintenance and testing upon resupply and ensuring marine vessels are refuelled with high quality fuel. After all, cleaner fuel is the key to better performance and cleaner air – you can read about it here.
