Bulk Fuel Australia is proud to be a sponsor of one of the country’s oldest forms of speedway racing, Compact Speedcars. Originally referred to as TQs (Three Quarter Midgets) way back when the speedway racing scene started gaining traction around Australia, they then became known as Junior Speedcars before their evolution to what we know today as Compact Speedcars. There are now Australian Championship race meetings for Compact Speedcars up and down the eastern seaboard of Australia.
Bulk Fuel Australia are such proud sponsors of the Qld Compact Speedcars, that at a recent event one of our directors Ashley Mitchell was on hand to present the trophies to the winning class drivers. With Qld Compact Speedcars adding “We hope to continue to have you on-board with us in the future!”
What are Compact Speedcars?
Compact Speedcars are all about the power to weight ratio. These light open wheel vehicles can be powered by either modified car or motorcycle engines and have been known to record lap times within seconds of what the V8 Sprintcars and V8 Dirt Modified vehicles can achieve.
One of the key attractions of the Compact Speedcar class is their size, which means the cars can easily be build, stored and serviced in a standard-sized garage. These vehicles must have a wheelbase between 1651mm and 1854.2mm, 330mm wheels and a maximum total car and driver weight of at least 430kg – with fuel.
Compact Speedcars are powered by methanol or similar alcohol fuel mixed with lube oil. Performances enhancing additives such as nitromethane, propylene oxide, trinitromethane, isopropyl nitrate or similar fuel additives are not permitted.
Like every category of racing vehicle, there are a number of rules and restrictions that Compact Speedcar drivers need to play by and most of these concern the engine specifications and driver safety regulations, including:
- The engine must be located in front of the driver
- Production car engine
- 2 valve with pushrods 1300cc + 10% overbore
- 2 valve with SOHC 1300cc + 8% overbore
- 2 valve with TOHC 1200cc + 6% overbore
- Multivalve 1050cc +7% overbore
- Production motorcycle engines
- 2 valve 1050cc + 6% overbore
- Multivalve 1000cc + 6% overbore
- Rotary, 2 stroke, turbocharged and supercharged engines are permitted.
- Fuel injection or carburettors and computer management systems allowed.
- Chassis specifically built to Compact Speedcar specifications; however Speedcar and Litre Sprintcar chassis may be modified to suit Compact Speedcar requirements.
- Most chassis are chrome moly and are made by recognized chassis manufacturers
Small, tough and fast
The most commonly used engines in Compact Speedcar racing are Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki motorcycle engines and for those racers using a car engine, the Suzuki Swift G13b is the most popular choice.
Due to the size, cost and ease of operation, Compact Speedcars are a great introduction for drivers of any age (over 16) to get involved in the high-octane, highly addictive hobby of Speedway racing.
