As we head towards the final weeks of an action-packed 2017, it’s time we look back on the year that was. It was a year of significant transition for the team at Bulk Fuel Australia. Here’s a recap of our most memorable moments from our General Manager of Sales and Marketing, Mal Vawdrey.

After beginning the year with a new team, we focused heavily on bringing in new business to complement the cartage and nominated work we handle for some of our suppliers. This deliberate strategy has paid off well in most regions with growing momentum in others. Our unique value proposition around ‘service with excellence’ and Final Filtered Diesel® has been the catalyst for this growing ‘free’ business and is something we will continue to work on.

As with any organisation, there has been some comings and goings in 2017 with David Miller returning to Bulk Fuel Australia with a direct focus on the Central and Far North regions of Queensland and Daryl Botha departing to a new role with our tank supplier, Petro Industrial. This opened the door for Chris Darwin to join the team mid-year in the Brisbane sales role. We have also welcomed Johnny Dao to the sales support role, joining Leigh Clarke, Shane Pendergast and myself, Mal Vawdrey, in the national sales team.

In terms of notable successes during 2017, the standout acquisition is the securing diesel supply to the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Cairns and Townsville for next April, with preliminary activity well underway to ensure we deliver on our promises. Chris Darwin is stewarding this project with great support from across all areas of the business and we look forward to demonstrating our capability with a project of such high exposure.

Our response to Cyclone Debbie earlier in the year also highlighted Bulk Fuel Australia’s ‘can do’ capability with fleet and drivers mobilised and supported by our local agents; assisting the authorities in restoring power and services to the Central Queensland coastal areas.

We continue to develop the business across all segments with good success in Civil Construction, supporting Emergency Power Generation, direct into locomotive train refuelling and more recently in the traditional rural markets of Central Queensland.

We have also intensified our relationships with a number of key industry suppliers in the cartage business with various new jobs handled throughout 2017. The fact that BP Australia has engaged Bulk Fuel Australia 24/7 for more than a year to handle train refuelling for their key account, Aurizon, at their Enfield yard in Sydney, is also a testament to the confidence that Bulk Fuel Australia has held within major industry organisations. Sadly, this task is coming to an end as Aurizon move focus to other areas of their business but we can say that our team in Sydney have done extremely well over a sustained period of activity and we now look at what new opportunities will arise.

There has been much positive activity during 2017, with our growth agenda continuing into 2018. Growth, however, does not just happen at the front end of the business. It comes because we are all contributing to the team success. I would take this moment to acknowledge the contributions of all areas of the business to what has been a rewarding year of transition.
