Australia remains focused on fuel quality

Fuel quality in Australia is ensured through high government standards, designed not only to better protect the environment but to ensure that clean petrol and diesel is also good for your engine.
These clean fuel supply protections are enshrined in the Fuel Quality Standards Act of 2000, which obliges fuel producers and suppliers to meet these high standards.
The number one focus of the Act, including the Fuel Quality Standards Regulations of 2001, is the environment.
Clean fuel helps the environment
When you're at the wheel of a car, the simple task of getting from 'A to B' means you are burning fossil fuels - a process that pumps harmful gases into the environment. So, as the 21st century progresses, car manufacturers are governed by much tougher vehicle emission standards, but the same applies to the fuel industry.
The aim was to help the environment by reducing the level of toxic pollutants in the gases that cars emit, which is good not only for the Earth, but also for the health of its inhabitants who breathe the air. But the fuel standards were also designed to be compatible with the latest technology directions in the car industry, as it applies to engine and emission controls.
Quality fuel delivers for Australia
Managed by the Department of the Environment, the laws had lofty goals. In the almost two decades of the laws being phased in, some pollutants - including damaging particulates and poisonous benzene - have been reduced by as much as 50%.
The Act prohibited the supply of unhealthy leaded petrol, which contained tetraethyl - great for boosting octane levels but producing very toxic pollutants. And diesel fuel had to be modified to reduce the levels of sulphur, which not only hurts the environment by affecting fuel filter function but produces gases that can lead to acid rain.
As recently as April of this year, an independent Australian government review found that the Act has been so successful in improving environmental and health outcomes that it will be kept in place. In the report, it was found that improved fuel quality "has contributed to a reduction in the level of greenhouse gas" in the environment.
