3 top fuel tank housekeeping tips

As vehicles and farm machinery have evolved, it's now become a necessity to use a higher grade of fuel. One of the key factors in this transition is the introduction of the common diesel engine.

Unfortunately, even if you use a more superior fuel grade, this doesn't always ensure you maintain the same level of fuel quality over time, unless you take the right steps to achieve this. By following the simple guidelines outlined below, you can more efficiently maintain your fuel quality.

Keep water out of your tank

Water is one of the most damaging elements when it comes to maintaining your fuel grade. You'll also find that the interface that exists between the water and diesel is the ideal growing conditions for the microbe known as the diesel bug.

Some important tips to help keep your fuel tanks in top condition are:

Make sure your fuel tanks remain full

The more fuel your vehicle uses, the more air is present in your fuel tank, which results in condensation. If you keep your fuel tanks full, this limits the amount of air build up.

Regularly assess your fuel tanks for water

If you open the fuel tank drain tap located at the bottom of the tank, you'll be able to drain any water that's present. It's crucial to open the tap slightly and close it when diesel starts flowing.

Other methods you can use to determine if you have water in the tank are using water finding paste or visually sampling the fuel.

Treating diesel bug in your fuel tank

There are ways of treating microbe contamination or diesel fuel bug if it's present in your tanks and affecting your fuel quality. You can find several different types of biocides on the market specifically formulated to kill bugs, but there are several things you need to consider, including:

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s safe handling instructions
  • Make sure the biocides don't contaminate the environment
  • Don't use biocides on a regular basis or a biocide-resistant bug may develop.
