With the price of fuel going up and up, we want to drive as efficiently as possible so we can conserve our fuel, and in return, save money.
Here at Bulk Fuel Australia, we’ve come up with 10 fuel saving tips that anyone can apply to their fleet or personal drives:
1. Restrict how much you drive
Cars gobble up fuel during the beginning of trips and throughout short journeys. This is mainly because vehicles aren’t functioning efficiently until the engine is warm. So if you want to cut back on your fuel consumption, ride a bike, take public transport, car pool or walk if the journey is less than 5km.
2. Drive properly
You'll save fuel when you drive in the right gear. Using a lower gear than necessary chews through your gas, and taking corners in higher gears also wastes fuel. Make sure you drive properly and don’t accelerate too hard.
3. Smooth driving saves fuel
Try driving at a speed that’s consistent and avoid heading out during rush hour, if possible. Heavy traffic means we’ll be revving our engine more frequently, and this burns through the fuel.
4. Turn off your engine when you’re not using it
Don’t leave your engine running when you’re not using your car. Stop the engine whenever you're stuck in prolonged traffic. Even if you switch off the ignition for a short amount of time, you will conserve some fuel.
5. Speeding will cost you
Speeding will cost you – and we don’t just mean in speeding fines! Speeding ends up burning your fuel faster than if you are travelling under 90km/h. If your speed is over 110km/h then your car can be using up to 25% more fuel than if it’s cruising at a speed of 90km/h or lower. Yet another reason not to speed!
6. Keep your car slick
If you have roof racks on the top of your car, or spoilers on the back, you might want to consider removing them to save on fuel. Even having your window open when you drive can create air resistance, which means your car has to work harder to move. Making your car more aerodynamic will improve your fuel economy.
7. Maintain the tyres on your vehicle
Tyre maintenance is vital if you want to keep fuel costs low. Ensure your tyres are pumped up to the recommended pressure and get a regular service to make sure they stay properly aligned.
8. Cut back on the air conditioning use
Air conditioners really chew through the fuel – they can use up to 10% more fuel than if turned off. However, if you are travelling at more than 80km/h, using your air conditioning is actually more fuel efficient than opening the window and creating an aerodynamic drag.
9. Cut down on the weight
This tip is simple – the heavier your car, the more fuel it needs to travel. So ditch the extra gear and travel light.
10. Stay on top of your servicing
If you get your car serviced regularly then it will stay in top condition and this will help you conserve fuel when you’re on the road.
