In the winter months when the mercury drops, there are plenty of places around Australia, particularly in the southern states, where internal heating is considered a must.
Heating oil is a clean, efficient and eco-friendly fuel option for domestic and commercial heating. Diesel fuel for heating oil is used to fuel furnaces and boilers for internal heating systems and is typically delivered by road and stored in a tank.
What is heating oil?
Heating oil is an efficient and clean alternative fuel for internal heating systems. Heating oil goes by many names but is generally considered to include the fuel types kerosene and gas oil:
Kerosene – Kerosene is an oil that’s used to fuel industrial/commercial engines and machinery, as well as domestic heating systems. Historically, kerosene was extracted from fossil fuels such as coal, oil shale or wood, but is now produced through the distillation of crude oil. It is distilled between 150°C and 275°C into a thin, clear liquid. It has a flash point similar to that of diesel, between 37°C and 65°C. Kerosene is a lighter and cleaner fuel than gas oil.
Gas Oil – Gas oil is a heavier oil generally used in older boilers and agricultural vehicles. Similar to kerosene, gas oil is produced through petroleum distillation. It condenses between 250°C and 350°C and in some countries is dyed red. This class of fuel oil has a flash point of approximately 52°C.
How is heating oil used, transported and stored?
Heating oil and diesel fuel for heating oil is used to heat homes and other internal spaces. Furnaces and boilers burn the oil to generate heat, which is then radiated or circulated via radiators or heat exchangers and fans. This same technology can be used to fuel hot water heaters and indoor swimming pools.
Heating oil, such as kerosene and gas oil, is commonly delivered by a tanker truck to residential, commercial and industrial buildings, and is stored in a storage tank situated either in a garage or adjacent to the building.
Like all petroleum products, prices do often change due to global oil prices and other domestic factors. Which is why it can be beneficial to have a good working relationship with a reputable heating oil supplier.
