What is cleaner diesel?

With global warming and a shortage of fossil fuels both being important issues that we, as a planet, are currently facing, more and more resources are being invested in developing greener and more efficient fuels. Cleaner diesel is one of the 'clean fuels' now available; here's what you need to know.
What is cleaner diesel?
Cleaner diesel is the latest generation of diesel technology. As science continues to advance the efficiency and cleanliness of fuel usage, we see new fuel products enter the market. The combination of ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) fuel with advanced, highly-efficient diesel engines and advanced emissions controls results in clean diesel and clean air.
Cleaner diesel fuel contains around 97% less sulphur than standard diesel fuel; this ULSD has been refined, resulting in a sulphur content that is 15 parts per million (ppm) or less, whereas regular diesel contains 500 ppm on average.
How efficient is cleaner diesel?
Standard diesel fuel is already very efficient when compared with other fuels: this petroleum-based fuel has the highest energy density (most energy per gallon) out of all common transportation fuels. But clean diesel technology pushes this efficiency even further and reduces harmful emissions.
The latest cleaner diesel engines reduce emissions with a particulate filter that works in a similar way to an oven's self-cleaning cycle. Small soot particles in the exhaust fumes are trapped by a filter which measures back pressure. As the particles accumulate and the back pressure increases, the sensor signals the engine's computer to inject more fuel. This results in heat building up in the filter, burning up the soot particles. All of this happens within a few minutes.
Fuel in Australia
Fuel quality in Australia is very high, with laws ensuring clean fuels are as clean as providers claim they are. The Fuel Quality Standards Act of 2000 makes sure that fuel producers and suppliers meet emissions standards, so that vehicles are efficient as they should be and toxic pollutants in the atmosphere are reduced. The act was updated in 2016 in line with new developments in the space.
However, contaminated diesel and other fuels are still a problem in some areas, causing thousands of dollars in damage to vehicles. People that are worried about using contaminated or 'dirty' diesel often invest in a supplementary fuel filter to protect their vehicle - especially when they have invested a lot in a vehicle with the latest clean diesel technology, which can be particularly sensitive to contaminated fuel.
