Self bunded tanks save money and the environment

A ‘bund’ refers to a secondary layer of protection or containment. In the case of bulk fuel or other chemical storage and handling, it’s a protective layer or wall around a potentially damaging substance – such as highly flammable fuel – that will prevent accidental spillage.
A self bunded tank or container incorporates that secondary layer into the design of the tank. In effect, a self bunded tank is a double walled or double skinned tank.
The major benefit of a self bunded tank is the cost saving. Self bunded tanks eliminate the need for specialist civil engineering or building works that were once the traditional means of preventing chemical spills from fuel and other hazardous chemical storage facilities.
Other benefits of self bunded tanks include:
- Speed – a self bunded tank is ready to go and can be fully operational within hours of delivery.
- Flexibility – self bunded tanks can be easily and safely removed, transferred and installed from location to location with little or no need for site remediation work.
- Durability – self bunded tanks must meet strict Australian safety standards. A self bunded tank is constructed of double stainless steel walls, capable of handling and storing flammable and combustible liquids such as hydrocarbons and industrial solvents, as required by Australian standard AS1940-2004.
Improving safety and preventing pollution
Self bunded tanks are all about improving safety – for the personnel on site and for the environment. Chemical spills are extremely costly – not only are the liable parties required to clean up the site to a government-mandated safety standard, there are also the lost time costs associated with safety issues that require EPA reporting and inspection.
All Bulk Fuel Australia’s tanks are self bunded and come in a range of sizes from 2000L to 80,000L. BFA’s smaller fuel cell cubes are also double skinned and fitted with 240v pump units, providing a safe, versatile fuel storage solution for any industry.
Bulk Fuel Australia provides safe, reliable on-site refuelling, bulk fuel delivery and storage across Australia. Get in touch to find out how we can help “fuel your efficiency” on 1300 57 9990.
